Launching Services in Teradek Core

Updated on

The Services tab provides access to advanced workflow tools, including:

  • Transcoders - Convert streams from H.265 to H.264.

  • Generic Ingest - Ingest streams from third-party encoders or software.

  • File Playback - Stream pre-recorded or uploaded video files.

  • Failovers - Configure multiple video feeds as cascading failovers in case the primary feed fails, using RTMP, SRT, MPEG-TS, or file playback.

Transcoders

The Transcoder Server allows you to convert HEVC video feeds to H.264. It ingests your HEVC video feed and converts it to H.264 for output.

With our current plans, you are billed hourly for the time your Transcoder Server is running. The hourly rate depends on your selected plan.

Important: Each Transcoder Server supports one input and up to 10 outputs per input. Outputs include channels, decoders, and restreamers combined. This is a hard technical limit and cannot be increased.

Follow the steps below to configure and launch a Generic Ingest Service in Teradek Core.

1. Configuration

  • Navigate to All Inventory → Services → Transcoder.
  • Click Launch Transcoder.
  • Enter a name for your Transcoder Server.
  • Click Next to proceed.

2. Input Settings

  • Select the required Input Type from the available options:
    • RTMP/RTMPS Ingest
    • SRT Listener
    • MPEG-TS Ingest
  • Click Next to proceed.

3. Output Settings

  • Select the desired output Codec: H.264 or H.265.
  • Configure the output video settings you want to change, or leave them unchanged to use the same settings as the input.
  • Click Next to proceed.

4. Launch Server

  • Review the service cost displayed on the page. The cost depends on your subscription plan.
  • Select the desired server deployment region.
  • Click Launch Server to start the deployment.

Your Transcoder Server will begin provisioning and become available once the deployment is complete.

Generic Ingest

Generic Ingest is a server service that provides additional streaming features. It allows you to ingest video feeds from third-party sources or Teradek encoders using RTMP, SRT (listener or caller), or MPEG-TS (ingest or pull).

Generic Ingest also supports playback of recorded files via Core Archive or a custom URL (supported file formats for playback are MKV, MP4, FLV, and MPEG-TS) and Webcam streaming using WebRTC input.

Important: Each Generic Ingest Server supports one input and up to 10 outputs per input. Outputs include channels, decoders, and restreamers combined. This is a hard technical limit and cannot be increased.

Follow the steps below to configure and launch a Generic Ingest Server in Teradek Core.

1. Configuration

  • Navigate to All Inventory → Services → Generic Ingest.
  • Click Launch Generic Ingest.
  • Enter a name for your Generic Ingest Service.
  • Click Next to proceed.

2. Input Settings

  • Select the required Input Type from the available options:
    • RTMP/RTMPS Ingest
    • SRT Listener
    • SRT Caller
    • MPEG-TS Ingest
    • MPEG-TS Pull
    • WebRTC Ingest
  • Click Next to proceed.

3. Launch Server

  • Review the service cost displayed on the page. The cost depends on your subscription plan.
  • Select the desired server deployment region.
  • Click Launch Server to start the deployment.

Your Generic Ingest Service will begin provisioning and become available once the deployment is complete.

You can later reconfigure the input type if needed.

File Playback

The File Playback service allows you to stream previously recorded video files through Teradek Core Archive or a custom URL (accepted file formats: .flv, .ts, and .mp4 encoded in H.264 with AAC audio, delivered over HTTP or HTTPS).

1. Configuration

  • Navigate to All Inventory → Services → File Playback.
  • Click Launch File Playback.
  • Enter a name for your File Playback Server.
  • Click Next to proceed.

2. Input Settings

  • Select the required File Type.
  • Click Next to proceed.

3. Launch Server

  • Review the service cost displayed on the page. The cost depends on your subscription plan.
  • Select the desired server deployment region.
  • Click Launch Server to start the deployment.

Your File Playback Server will begin provisioning and become available once the deployment is complete.

You can later reconfigure it to stream another recorded files from Core Archive or a custom URL.

Failovers

The Failover server provides path redundancy for video streaming, allowing you to automatically or manually switch between a primary video feed and backup streams or recorded video files. If the primary feed fails or disconnects, the service can switch to a backup source to help maintain stream continuity.

Failover supports video feeds from third-party sources or Teradek encoders via RTMP/PTMRS Ingest, SRT (Listener or Caller), and MPEG-TS (Ingest or Pull). You can also use previously recorded files from Core Archive or a custom URL (accepted file formats: .flv, .ts, and .mp4 encoded in H.264 with AAC audio, delivered over HTTP or HTTPS).

Important requirements:

  • All inputs must have identical video properties, including codec, resolution, pixel format, codec profile, and level.
  • Only AAC audio is supported.
  • H.264 feeds containing B-frames are not supported.
  • Connect or ingest the Primary stream first for backup switching to operate correctly.

 1. Configuration

  • Navigate to All Inventory → Services → Failover.
  • Click Launch Failover.
  • Enter a name for your Failover Server.
  • Click Next to proceed.

2. Input Settings

  • Configure the input types for your video sources. By default, two inputs are available: Primary and Input 1.
  • If you need additional backup sources, add more inputs. You can configure up to five inputs in total, including the Primary input.
  • Select the required input type for each source. Available options include:
    • RTMP/RTMPS Ingest
    • SRT Listener
    • SRT Caller
    • MPEG-TS Ingest
    • MPEG-TS Pull
    • File Playback
  • Click Next to proceed.

3. Launch Server

  • Review the service cost displayed on the page. The cost depends on your subscription plan.
  • Select the desired server deployment region.
  • Click Launch Server to start the deployment.

Your Failover Server will begin provisioning and become available once the deployment is complete.

You can then reconfigure your primary and backup sources as needed and use automatic failover or manual switching to switch between them.
